Enclosed is the eighth issue of the UTEP Research Newsletter. In this issue, UTEP Research Administration has provided information regarding COVID-19’s impact on proposal submissions and post-award management. In addition to the updates we have included from federal funding agencies, we are happy to announce that all staff from ORSP and C&G Accounting are operational working remotely using the normal electronic business processes. Also in this issue are highlights of new research awards; research stories recently published by University Communications; upcoming events; new Expertise Connector personal profiles and list of enhancements to the system; patents received by UTEP researchers in the last four months; as well as a recap of this semester’s Research Forum. Enjoy the read and we hope you are safe and healthy.
On January 25, faculty, staff, and students from across the University gathered in the Tomás Rivera Conference Center for the January 2020 Research Forum. Hosted by Vice President for Research Roberto Osegueda, the event provided an opportunity to recognize the achievements of UTEP researchers and the dozens of new sponsored projects and patents at the University since the Fall 2019 Research Forum.
After a few words from Dr. Osegueda about several new collaboration and proposal-refining tools available to UTEP researchers, the event featured appreciative remarks from UTEP President Heather Wilson. Dr. Wilson highlighted the excellent efforts of faculty and staff which, thanks to historic achievements like the Carnegie R1 designation, and the $100+ million research expenditures milestone announced in December 2019, are raising the profile of the University to new heights.
Though only representing a portion of the research activity occurring at UTEP, the January 2020 Research Forum highlighted 56 new extramurally funded grants and 14 patents obtained by UTEP faculty and staff between October 2019 and January of this year. The projects showcased the breadth of scholarly inquiry and programmatic interests of UTEP faculty and staff. The list of recognized projects ranged in scope and subject area—from patents to advance the development of vaccines for diseases such as Chagas and tuberculosis, to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a cross-border art installation that garnered national headlines.
Support for student success was again a prominent theme of the night, especially for interdisciplinary awards. With a focus the STEM fields and a combined total of nearly $2.6 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation, the four awards recognized in the interdisciplinary category will enable the creation of student support programs, particularly for those who are first-generation college-going and students from low-income households.
We are pleased to announce all sponsored projects officially received by ORSP between the period of December 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020. Please click on the “Read Full Announcement” link to learn more about each award below.
